Aunt Lucille's 90th Birthday

Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech

Angela and I took Ben and Anna to the Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech in Houghton. Susan stayed home to babysit Caleb.The kids liked the variety of choices in the food court. It turned out to be a very international experience as we could hear conversations by Chinese and Indian students around us.

The warm weather last week and snow Thursday kept the statues from being as spectacular as some years, but they were still impressive.

A group was giving dog sled rides. Anna and Ben got acquainted with these Malamutes.

Family Christmas

The family has grown to the point that we had to divide things up. Our kids came over Friday evening and Susan's family on Saturday. My camera malfunctioned part way through the evening on Friday, so I didn't get pictures of everyone that night and none on Saturday. Here is what I did get:

Saturday night's gathering was a lot quieter, and easier since we primarily served the leftover ham and turkey from Friday's meal. Susan's folks are doing well for their years.

Church on Sunday morning was very nice. Rebecca sang beautifully in a duet with Eliza Compton and Angela sang a solo, "O Holy Night." We only had sacrament meeting. I could get used to a one hour church session very easily.

After church, the Comptons, Beth and Stuart's family, the missionary sisters, and us caroled an elderly couple in the Ward, then Johnsons, Rayhorns, and us caroled Susan's folks. There were tasty treats. Ben and Anna thought it was lunch.

Susan and I took Buddy for a short walk at dusk, visited with Andrew's family, and then viewed some to the Christmas lights in our end of town.

Angela and Ethan have been very busy remodeling their new house. Monday, they are sanding the floors. They anticipate an all-day effort. Their move-in date is January 7th.

A Barely White Christmas in Marquette

It was looking like Marquette would have a dull brown Christmas, but a couple of inches accumulated on the Thursday before Christmas and have stayed through the holiday. It has been a sad time for the skiers, but nice hiking for Buddy and me. Here's Ben and Anna sledding on Friday.

Homecoming

We got home at the kid's bedtime, so the reunion was brief. Ben missed us so much that he broke out in hives (or maybe some other reason). It went away with a sauve. Buddy, too, was estatic to see us although he regained his composure by the time these pictures were taken.

After church in Logansport we drove to Fort Wayne to visit Harry and Linda overnight. They are proud of their new garage and the new fireplace and book shelves in the basement. We enjoyed our visit. All is well with their family who were all present for Thanksgiving in Fort Wayne on Saturday.

Susan and I went to church at the Logansport Branch and saw a lot of old friends, some older and others nearly as old as us...Samuels, Bill Tincher, Highleys, Smileys, Stevens, John Drach, Kings, Knepners, Newcomers, Sister Cotner and met some new folks. But the oldest was 91 year old Sister Rosilyn Winters who was on the temple trip with us when we we sealed 33 years ago.

All's Wells

The primary reason for the trip to Indiana was to attend Jeanne Wells' memorial service. It was very appropriate with a string quartet prividing the music. Friends and relatives recalled Jeanne's elegance, culture, wit, kindness, and cheerfulness.

Jeanne had bought mom and dad's house before mom died, but had been improving the house. She was living there the last several months before her death. So after the services at Zimmerman's Funeral Home, friends and family gathered at 201 W 9th.

Here are four generations of Wells men: Oliver and his son Owen (born on my birthday, Oct 16th), James Oscar Wells, IV "Augie" and his dad Oscar, aka James Oscar Wells III, and the patriach, James O. Wells II, who is still practicing law at 84 years of age. Oliver is full time with the National Guard on a emergency response team. He is also on the Indiana Guard's biathalon team.

Oscar and Augie (JO IV), John, Emily and her husband Jason, a family friend Terry Lee, and I had a traditional Rochester breakfast at the Evergreen. Emily and Jason live in Colorad0 where they work for the Forest Service mostly fighting forest fires.

Jeanne had a caregiver/cook/cleaner toward the end who is an Amish lady originally from Berne. She cooked for the gathering after the services: noodles, mashed potatoes, pumpkin roll, pumpkin pie, blueberry pie. John and I both had the same reaction when we entered the house, "smells just like home" with the delicious aromas. The aroma combined with the young children made it feel just home again.

When JO was ready to leave, he asked if he had his hat when he came in. John and I sang the response to him that he first heard about 40 years ago from the Jones whole chorus.

Ma Clary

I had contacted Jim Clary and learned that he and Bev were visiting Erik in Illinois for the holiday. But Susan and I were able to meet Jim's mom Pat for lunch. I forgot to take a picture, but no matter, she looks the same as always. She talked about staying busy with church and community service. A bit of irony, at 83, she helps out reading to the old people at the Senior Citizens Center. We had a very pleasant visit.

We went to Andrew's and Sabrina's for Thanksgiving Dinner. The Missionary Sisters joined us for the meal. Sue's folks came by for dessert. I left my camera home so I didn't get pictures of the dinner but it was a great meal in the highest traditions.

We left for Indiana Friday morning, but had to say good bye to the grandkids before we left. Her is Susan and Hudson:

Ben was sick on Wednesday and Thanksgiving but was okay by Friday. Caleb displayed a healthy appetite. Here is Susan before the departure.

Dewey's Graduation Party

I don't care for the connotation of the word retirement, so I have been referring to my leaving the professional Scouting ranks as Graduation. I also was not eager to have a farewell party since I will be staying in the area and active in Scouting. However, some of the volunteers insisted that something be done. Barb Dupras explained that there needed to be an event to bring "closure" to my time as Scout Executive.

However, the event turned out to be very gratifying for me and everyone seemed to enjoy getting together. And it brought closure.

The most gratifying part of the event was the result of an idea Susan presented to the committee: People were encouraged to do a "Good Deed" in my honor and Susan and Angela compiled these into a book. There we about 75 responses. I was moved by these good deeds and the comments that accompanied them.

It was also gratifying for so many Scouting and community friends to make the effort to be with us, especially James and Amy McClellan and their kids who drove up from Ann Arbor.

Angela was the designated photographer, but did not get everyone. However, she captured the spirit of the event.

Thanks to all who attended and the many others who sent cards, emailed, called, or expressed appreciation in person during the past few weeks. And thanks to the Graduation Party committee, Barb Dupras, Marv and Lois Gibson, Joe and Sue Erickson, Heather Carroll, and Susan Jones.

As I said at the party, it has been a privilege to be able to serve as the Scout Executive of the Hiawathaland Council and to support the great volunteers in the Upper Peninsula.

Thanks to Erinn Fetterman Swan for baking the cake and all the others who provided a hearty luncheon.

State Representative Steve Lindberg presented a resolution from the State Assembly signed by him, State Senator Tom Casperson, and Governor Snyder.

Mayor pro tem Johnny DePetro and City Manager Bill Vadja presented a certificate from the City of Marquette. Johnny also represented the Vietnam Veterans of America and presented a certificate. I had worked with them intensively last spring on the memorial for Gary Lee, an Eagle Scout from Kingsford who was killed in action in Vietnam.

Commander Gary White of the Lyons Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War presented a colorful certificate. I have been a member of the camp for about 10 years and plan to be more active in the future.

American Legion Post Commander Mike Tricky presented a certificate from the Post. I helped with their Veteran's Memorial Project in 2001.

Fellow Wood Badger and Fox Patrol member, Sharon "Granny Fox" Vierk drew a beautiful fox on wood as a remembrance of our Wood Badge experience.

Marv Gibson presented a nice plaque from the National Guard.

A real surprise was the presentation of an honorary St George Award from the Marquette Diocese. It is the Catholic Church recognition for adults and can be awarded to non-Catholics. Barb Dupras and Dave Jenner made the presentation.

A Beautiful October Hike

I didn't think we would have another beautiful Saturday in October, but we were blessed yesterday morning. Buddy and I took a 2 1/2 hour hike. The overlook of Harlow Lake.

We started at the Little Presque Isle parking lot and hiked the Superior shoreline to Wetmore Landing, then crossed County Road 550 and picked up the trail marked in red. At the north end of Harlow Lake, we took the trail along Harlow Creek, crossed 550 again and returned to the parking lot.

An Enjoyable Birthday

I had a nice, relaxing birthday with church in the morning, a nap and walk with Buddy in the afternoon and the kids coming by in the evening in intervals. Playful Susan in my lap and a tired Buddy at my feet. Buddy has usually been getting two walks a day, one from Al and one from me.

Learned on Facebook today that Oscar Wells' son Oliver became the father of a boy, Owen, today! Someone to party with in the future on our mutual birthday. He can party heartily, and I'll party hardly.

Yesterday, Susan and Angela were in Green Bay for a Stake Relief Society meeting. Ethan and Andrew, their kids and I had breakfast together at McDonalds. It was a good time. In the afternoon, Austyn had his last football game of the season. Thankfully, it was in the Superior Dome rather than outside in the blustery weather. Susan got home in time for the end of the game, then she and I went out for pizza as a birthday treat.

A Beautiful October Weekend

It was a great weekend...actually unbelievable for October. The temperature got up to 80 on Friday and Saturday.

Saturday, I was supposed to go to Iron Mountain to help with Cub Scout Training. I was about to leave when I checked my phone and discovered a voice mail message from the night before saying the training was cancelled due to insufficient sign ups. So I had a free day, or a retirement preparation day as I consider it.

The 11 year old Scouts were camping at Stuart and Beth's back yard, so I went to visit for a bit. Andrew and Austyn were part of the crew. I helped with some knot tying instruction. There were a half dozen boys there having a good time.

Buddy and I took a beautiful 2 1/2 hike- Wetmore Landing to Little Presque Isle along Lake Superior, up Harlow Creek to Harlow Lake, along the rugged east side of Harlow Lake with two beautiful outlooks, and back to Wetmore.

Susan and I went to Austyn's football game after lunch. He made a key tackle at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, but was down after the play. He laid there quite a while and an ambulance was called. He went to the emergency room to be checked out. He is wearing a neck brace for the sprained neck and has some soreness, but is okay.

With the beautiful weather, we went to the beach at Little Presque Isle with Angela's family. See her site for great pictures. Susan went in for a swim. The muscles in the calves of my legs cramped when I stepped in the water.

Everyone but Stuart and Austyn was in church Sunday, so that was very special.

I had to leave after church for a meeting of the Scout merger committee in Menominee. That took up the rest of the day. The meeting went well.

My camera is not working, I plan to replace it this week, but Angela and Sabrina do a great job with pictures on their blogs and Facebook pages, so visit those sites.

My Last Round Up

September was very busy with Scouting round ups and Saturday activities. Last Friday was probably my last Cub Scout Round Up, as a professional.

I am facing the reality of retirement effective Oct 31. Scouting has been difficult this fall. Our new District Executive got an unsolicited job offer that he could not refuse, so I have been on the road a lot more than I anticipated this month. There were good activities at the International Scout Rally in the Eastern UP, Seney Wildlife Refuge Scout Day, and the Bobcat Trail at Camp Hiawatha.

Susan accompanied me to a Regional Scout Executive Conference at the O'Hare Hilton. Said farewell to some old friends, although most of my contemporaries have already retired. After the conference adjourned, we did a session the Chicago Temple. I had a nice visit with Coy Miskin who is a member of the Temple Presidency. We spent that night with Bump's family. They are a very active and wholesome family.

We have had some beautiful fall weather that gave Buddy and me great opportunities for walks. However, we had a windstorm last Thursday that took out the power in parts of the town for up to 30 hours. We were unaffected at home, but the phone system at work was knocked out, probably by a power surge. Still waiting for a service crew from AT&T.

Angela and Sabrina write better blogs than I do, so I won't cover their family situations. As Sabrina reports, Austyn is playing football and doing very well being on offense, defense, kick off, and point after touchdown teams. Beth and Stuart's James is in cross country. He is also in 5th grade and placed 12th in a county wide meet for 5th & 6th graders.

Splash Village

When Ethan and Angela lived in Clio, Susan and Anna got passes to "Splash Village" in Zehnder's hotel in Frankenmuth. I promised Anna we could all go there for Ethan's graduation. So there we were. A good and exhausting time was had by all.

Ethan's graduation was on Sunday. I'll leave it to Angela to chronicle that event, but must say how proud we are of Ethan's persistence, diligence, and hard work to earn his doctorate degree in physical therapy.

Mackinac Island Scout Service Troop 2011

The Mackinac Island Scout Service Camp is a unique opportunity for Scouts. They spend a week on the Island serving as the Honor Guard putting up and taking down the flags and as guides at the State Park attractions. They also have free time to earn merit badges, go shopping, visit special attractions like the Grand Hotel, bicycle, swim, hike and compete in events like the pie eating contest. Thanks to Scoutmaster Craig Woerpel, cook/wife Patty, and the rest of the volunteer staff for making this opportunity available.

We visited our Scouts serving as the Mackinac Island Scout Service Troop on the Island. We spend a night on the Island this year.

Ethan's sister Ashley married Joe on August 13th. Anna and her cousin Rory Kennison were flower girls. Ben was asked to be ring bearer, but wanting to be like Anna, insisted that he be the flower boy. The wedding was at the bandstand on Presque Isle and the reception at the pavillion. Beautiful miss Anna.

Karl Eggers who was in the Scout Troop in Rochester and his family came for a visit. They live in Long Beach California. We visited the Michigan Mining Museum, the Ski Hall of Fame in Ishpeming, saw a bit of scenery, and introduced them to pasties. Susan and I, Odile and Karl.

I missed getting a picture of their daughter Stephanie who enjoyed staying with Anna and Ben. Their son, Raphael, is in the picture with the re-enactors in another posting.

Andy, Hudson, Anna, Ben, Buddy, and I took a Saturday morning walk along the Dead River Reservoir. We were out before the heat and the bugs were not noticeable. A fun time. Hudson enjoys the outdoors.

Putnam Reunion

The Putnam decendants gathered in Plymouth Township Park, Plymouth, MI for the annual reunion. It was a great site with a splash pad, sandbox with statue, and playground for the kids. All were in close proximity. The weather was summer in July with the temperature above 90 degrees. But the shade, breeze, and splash pad made an enjoyable time of it. Harry went to Kentucky and met Dick and picked up his 3 boys earlier in the week. Here is the oldest Jared on top of a statue in the sandlot.

Angela's kids have been excited all week about the getaway to the Putnam reunion. We left Friday afternoon and spent the night at West Branch after linking Ethan up with a classmate. They were going to Flint for a class to prepare for their board exam after they graduate. The kids and I had a good swim in the pool at the motel. On the drive to Plymouth, we stopped at a grocery store to get some food for the potluck and had this unique shopping cart.

Another Glorious Fourth

I had a full day on the 4th: toured the Mackinaw, attended the Veteran's Memorial rededication, was in the parade with the Scouts, went to Beth and Stuart's for a family get together, and babysat Caleb and Buddy during the fireworks. Andrew, Sabrina, and Hudson watch the parade.

The governor signed legislation authorizing a license plate for the Boy Scouts, so I made the trip to Lansing to represent the council. I wasn't real eager to spend the time and money for the trip but felt someone should be there. As I walked up the steps in the capitol building, I ran into Eric and Adam Smith, a leader and his son from Marquette. They were in Lansing for Eric's older sons orientation at Michigan State. Adam would have been an excellent representative for the council and saved me the trip. Oh well, the getaway was good.

A Scouting friend of mine in the Coast Guard, Jim Simmons, is now assigned to the Coast Guard ice breaker Mackinaw. It was moored in Marquette's lower harbor over the 4th of July weekend. Jim gave Scouter Marv Gibson, his wife Lois, and me a private tour of the boat. The original Mackinaw was built in WWII to keep the Great Lakes shipping lanes open longer. The current Mackinaw was commissioned in 2006 so it is crammed with the latest technology.

June 30th was the 33rd anniversary of our wedding day. As the pictures show, we have not changed a bit. I was working that evening, but we got out to a special dinner at a new Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood on Saturday.

It was a busy week, especially Saturday. Susan and Beth took the Cub Scouts including Austyn and James to Day Camp. I had a major event being MC for a memorial service for an Eagle Scout/APO member from NMU who died in Vietnam.

After that event, Ben and I went to visit the Day Camp, but everyone had already left. We stopped at Frosty Treats on the way home.

There was a baptism for Linzie Stevens in the evening that we attended.

All in all, a great day with great weather.

A Burry Father's Day

We spent Friday night with Harry and Linda, then drove back to the UP on Saturday. As we drove through the lower peninsula, the temperature was in the low 80's. As we approached the Mackinac Bridge the temperature dropped to the upper 60's. We bought some sandwiches and stopped at a look out along Lake Michigan. Driving across the UP, the temperature again approached 80, but when we reached the Lake Superior coast, it dropped to the high 50's. Free air conditioning! For Father's Day, we wanted to keep it simple with a picnic at Presque Isle Park. The temperature was about 50 degrees- Burry. Burry is a work Susan invented that describes the temperature when you say "burr." It wasn't terribly burry, but it sure was not warm, especially for mid-June. We enjoyed the fellowship- briefly. Headed home as it started to rain. It was a great afternoon for a nap.

The Summit

The purpose of our trip was to visit the Summit, the new Jamboree/High Adventure site for the BSA in West Virginia in the New River area. The scenery is spectacular and the program for the Scouts promises to be just as awesome- whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and zip lines as well as the traditional Jamboree features. I am planning to apply for the staff for the first Jamboree there in 2013.

Back to Buffalo

On Tuesday, Harry had jury duty, so I took a day trip over to visit old Camp Buffalo. On the way, I stopped to see Jim Clary and Harry Rodkey in Peru and enjoyed reminising with them.

It was heartening to see the improvements at Camp Buffalo and the condition of the camp. The new dining hall is an immense resource to the camp plus they did an outstanding job of remodelling the old dining hall into the first aid center, conference center, and bunk rooms.

It was 50 years ago that I went to Boy Scout Summer Camp for the first time. Walking around the camp with Will McCune was quite a nostalic experience.

This is in the Oaks campsite. In 1961, there was an Adirondack shelter here that I stayed in during my first week of Boy Scout camp.

The burr on this oak in Tent City camp site was a landmark 50 years ago. I have a picture of Brother Dick as a Scout by this tree.

The old Dining Hall has been remodelled into the First Aid center, a conference center, and bunk rooms for winter camping.

This is the tree plantation east of the entrance. It was in pine trees, then a cornfield. In the early 1990's, the hardwood tree plantation was put in. Our Philmont crew pruned here in 1993 when the trees were less then knee high to get our conservation hours in for the 50 miler award.

The Lafayette Stake will be having their summer camp at Buffalo in 2012. If Harry goes with Amy's Logan, I hope to be there or else with John's troop or maybe both.

Well, this blog posting got turned upside down. I started with the narrative and videos below, but then when I added these pictures, they came out on top. I might be able to move things around, but that would be too much trouble. So you can start at the bottom and read up or just enjoy the pictures and videos. Pat, Amber, and Griff came up for supper and an overnight Tuesday. Pat had a seminar in Fort Wayne on Wednesday. It is fun visiting with them.

Susan and I are enroute to a conference at The Summit, the new Boy Scout High Adventure and Jamboree site in West Virginia. Sunday night we stayed at Bump and Teresa's home in Chicago where Chuck and Amy were also visiting. We arrived late in the evening, but had time to catch up with each other and enjoy the company.

We took a good part of Monday traveling from Chicago to Harry and Linda's in Fort Wayne. Had a pleasant evening after a cookout with them and George and Anna's family looking over the landscaping and beekeeping projects on their property. Uncle John and Aunt Lu

We left Bambi and went on to Oscoda to visit Uncle John and Aunt Lu. We had a pleasant time catching up on family news, looking at their lovely yard, eating a delicious lunch, and discussing the sorry state of the world. John has overcome his recent health challenges with pneumonia and heart arrythmia. He had mowed the lawn on Friday! Lu does the gardening and still bowls every week. So John is not in the "fade away" mode, still going strong.

Susan went with me to a Scout Conference in Lansing on Friday. We were able to take a leisurely trip back. Enroute to visit Uncle John Putnam and Aunt Lu, we stayed Friday night at a motel in Tawas City, the "Bambi." These rockers were outside the office, so we spent some time practicing for "gradutation." I don't like the connotation of the word retirement, so I have decided that I will graduate rather than retire at the end of October. My goal is to graduate with honors.

I started Memorial Day with a brisk walk along Lake Superior with a group called Warriors Relief Fund. It is a local group that provides immediate assistance to families of deployed service members and injured veterans. It was about 5 miles round trip. Several Rotarians were on the walk.

I forgot to take pictures, but it was a nice Mother's Day. Susan led the Primary Children singing in Sacrament Meeting while Angela played the piano. Pretty long stem roses were given out this year.

Saturday night, Susan and I went out to eat and then attended the symphony on tickets given to us by Andrew.

Susan's folks, Jean, and Steve came over for supper. Bean soup and the leftover sauerkraut soup were the main course, but there were several tasty salads and breads.

Al came by after work. He was in Calumet Friday and Saturday nights with his girlfriend's family. They took Buddy with them. Al discovered that Buddy is afraid of cats!

Sabrina's mom and sister were here for the craft show at the dome, so Andrew was busy babysitting and visiting with them.

So, all in all, a very nice Mother's Day.

It was a good week. Al is enjoying his work at Super 8, in his second week now. Susan and I had an overnighter with a Scout function. Anna and Ben were so enamoured with our getaway to St Ignace that they wouldn't forgive us for taking a getaway without them, so we referred to it a s business meeting. We stayed in a good motel on the channel in Houghton. We had a merit badge day going on Saturday that I covered. Susan used the pool Saturday morning. We had a dinner Friday night and a late lunch on the way back to Marquette. Had a good visit with Hudson and family on our return to Marquette. Ethan's clinicals (internship) in Alpena is going well. Ben and Anna were in joking mood last night. Thought you would enjoy these videos.

Drummond Island

Sue and I had quite a bit of time on our hands since the Eagle ceremony Sunday evening did not start until 6 pm. Drummond Island is a large island in Lake Huron at the extreme eastern end of the Upper Peninsula. It is accessible by a 10 minute ferry ride from DeTour Village. I had never been on Drummond Island, so this was a great opportunity, even though the weather was cool and foggy. Here are pictures of the ferry.

I had Eagle Scout ceremonies to attend in the Soo on Saturday and in Hessel Sunday evening. Since Ethan was coming home from Alpena on Friday and Andrew's family was returning from visiting Sabrina's folks near Traverse City on Saturday, we made it into a getaway weekend at the Voyager Inn in St Ignace. Angela stayed home with Caleb.

Brother John came up for the annual Sled Dog race. Mild temperatures during the week caused a major melting of snow, but there was enough for the start Friday night in downtown Marquette. President Obama came to Marquette Thursday for a 3 hour visit. His purpose was to highlight Northern Michigan University's use of the internet wireless system. He did a lot for the area's ego. The TV station has a slogan of "The Upper Peninsula- Someplace Special." This must prove it.

Susan's mom was in the downtown restaurant area when Obama stopped for lunch. That was the only family connection with the visit.

Susan, her mother, sister, Beth, Angela, and Sabrina try to get together monthly for a "Ladies Luncheon" at a restaurant. So I invited the men and boys plus Anna over to the house for a Fat Boys Brunch. We had eggs, pork bacon, turkey bacon, sausage, finger steak, waffles. toast, bagels, Trenary toast ( a cinnamon toast produced locally), grapes, and pineapple. It you were not a Fat Boy before breakfast, you are now on the way. Hudson bundled up for the trip home.

Our little Angela turned 30 this week. Seems like we were just rocking her and now we are rocking her children. Anna was excited to prepare breakfast in bed for her mom on birthday morning and was very cute about it. Ben got into the spirit of it, too. Ethan has been doing his "clinicals" (like an internship) in Iron Mountain this 10 week rotation. It is about an hour and a half drive away. He can stay with Steve and Jan Lewis there but has been coming home about every other day and is here for the weekend. His next clinical is in Alpena, then the last 10 weeks is here in Marquette.

I ordered a new camera on line and it arrived Christmas Eve eve as we were having the family gathering of our kids and families. It took we a while to figure it out or maybe for it to warm up, but I didn't get many pictures. The house was a bit crowded. We had a good feast- turkey breast, ham, and so on.

Christmas is coming

Winter has really set in but the holiday festivities are keeping the mood jolly. The ward Christmas Party was special. The highlight was the primary presentation of the manger scene. See Angela's blog for pictures and detailed narrative but Susan and I gorged on a grandparents' banquet: Hudson was baby Jesus, Austyn was Joseph, James was a wiseman, Anna was a reverent angel, and Ben was either a lost shepherd or looking for lost sheep. The Compton family did their annual rendition of the 12 Days of Christmas. It was a great evening.

Sunday's sacrament meeting included a group of 8 singing. Angela, Andrew, and Stuart all particpated. Rachel played the piano for a trio that included Rebecca.

Susan and I had special time rocking and singing with Caleb on Saturday and Monday evenings.

Monday night we attended the high school band concert with Stuart (intermintantly as he was on call and left twice to take phone messages) and Beth. It included Rachel and several of the youth from Church and Scouts. Rebecca's school choral concert is tonight.

I ordered a new camera online. The same model as the broken one. It was $90 compared to the $150 I spent last spring. Maybe they are closing out the model. At any rate, my blogs should again be picturesque in the future.

Real Winter

After last week's initiation, winter is here to stay. Pretty much continuous snow all week. Highs in the teens for the coming week.

Buddy and I had a good walk in the snowy woods yesterday, but the snow will probably be too deep now.

Caleb continues to improve. I think he will be home this week.

Ethan got home safely Thursday night. It was good to have everyone together in church today. Ethan home, Stuart sitting in the congregation with his family, Andrew and family there. Hudson got a lot of attention.

Signed the paperwork on refinancing the house at 3.75%. I never thought that would happen.

The First Blast

Winter finally delivered its first blast with 8-10 inches of dry snow. Lucky- usually the first snow is wet and heavy. I shoveled at church this morning then at home in the afternoon. I rediscoved my shoveling muscles.

I visited Caleb yesterday and today. He is progressing, but not rapidly. I think he will be home this week. Ethan gets home for Christmas break on Thursday night. Hope Caleb is here to greet him.

I had a fun time with Hudson Saturday with Ben (see pictures on Sabrina's facebook page) and Sunday evening. Sabrina has been cooking up delectible Christmas treats.

A lot of Scouting this weekend....the Order of the Arrow Winter Conference here in Marquette and Tran Holman's Eagle Court of Honor in Skandia.

Anna had a big day Saturday. I imagine Angela will chronicle it in detail. She went to the Nutcracker with Susan and Rebecca, then to a party put on by a school friend. She feels like she has arrived in high society.

Ben was a handfull during sacrament meeting. Thankfully, Ethan will be here starting next Sunday.

I had a funny experience at the bank Saturday morning. I have noticed over the last several months that the tellers at the drive through were trained to notice your name on the deposit slips and then ask, "Is there anything else you need, Mr. Jones?" or maybe "Enjoy the weekend, Dewey." After I made the deposit for the Scouts and was starting to drive away, the teller said, "Have a good day, Hiawatha."

Caleb is off the respirator. This is the first time Angela was able to hold him. He will still be in the hospital a bit, but is progressing.

Caleb is still in the hospital. His condition had been stable but his lungs improved significantly this weekend. See Angela's blogsite for pictures and more details.

Hudson reached the 2 month mark and is progressing rapidly. He is very animated and makes interesting faces. Andrew spoke in sacrament meeting today on the role of families. There were a lot of good comments.

Angela and Ethan went to Rayhorns for Thanksgiving, Andrew and Sabrina had friends from her work over to their house, and we went to Beth's along with Whitney and Martha, Stuart's folks. We enjoyed the traditional Thanksgiving meal. It was a late supper as I helped with the dinner at the homeless shelter in the afternoon.

I had great walks with Buddy on both Friday and Saturday although the weather has been overcast and gloomy.

Good bye, Buster

I haven't been posting the last couple of weeks since I had no pictures to put on and they really make the blog. I had the camera on the charger where it was within Ben's reach. I came home and the camera did not open fully when the button was pushed. A replacement will be in next month's budget.

So here is a reprint of Buddy and Buster, Andrew and Sabrina's Springer Spaniel romping on a walk along the Dead River. Since Andrew and Sabrina moved into town in July, energetic Buster has been part of our morning walks. He energized Buddy as they played chase, rather aggressively, but not too rough.

But baby and puppy were too much in one household. So Sunday, Buster went to a new home in the country where he will have lots of room to roam and use up all his energy. Buddy and I will miss him, and now I need another excuse to drop by and see Hudson everyday.

Brother Harry drove up for the weekend, an 8 hour drive. He and I had a relaxing day Saturday, doing some hiking under overcast skys. Here are the Jones boys: Harry, Alex, Dewey, Hudson, and Andrew.

It was also the Primary Presentation in sacrament. Anna was in the front row of the performers and stood out, at least in my eyes.

Austyn has been in flag football this fall. We got to his game in Ishpeming Saturday morning. He caught a pass in the endzone for a touchdown, but I was too slow with the camera to catch it.

For my birthday, Susan, Buddy, and I had a getaway overnight to Harvey. We stayed at a motel with a great view of Lake Superior. Saturday morning, Buddy and I took a predawn walk for about an hour then sat on the balcony to enjoy the sunrise.

A Fabulous Fall

We have been having ideal fall weather. Last week, we drove around "The Island" and were checked out at departure by this deer.

My Saturdays have been filled with Scouting (See UP Scouting link). Above is a picture of Buddy at Camp Hiawatha's Bunting Lake.

Sunday afternoon, I took an absolutely fantastic hike in the Harlow Lake/Wetmore Landing/Little Presque Isle area. Unfortunately, I didn't take the camera, so the images are only recorded in my mind.

Hudson is doing well. I see him nearly every morning when I pick up Andrew's dog Buster for his walk with Buddy and me.

Our office has always closed for Columbus Day, but this is the first year that I did not go in and work anyway. I had a great day. Ben, Susan, and I went to the library for the children's story hour in the morning while Anna was at kindergarden. I went to Rotary for lunch. In the afternoon, Susan, Anna, and I did some errands, went shopping for Polly Pockets, and had a treat at Culvers. I linked up with Al and we met a guy who purchased his car. With Angela here and Marquette's strict winter parking requirements, we did not have room for him to park through the winter. And again, with Angela here, it was really more cares than we need. Then Al, his friend Jacob Blotter and I went to Applebees for supper. A great day...preparing for how to be retired in a year and 4 months.

Hudson Tyler Jones was born a little after 8 am on 10/01/10. Sabrina had a long night of labor and then the decision was made to preform a ceasarean section since it had been such a long time. He weighed in at 7 pounds 2 ounces. Hudson, Sabrina, and Andrew are all doing well.

Fall Fun

Gramma Susan amazed the kids with her bubble blowing ability after all the activity.

Saturday, we watched the NMU homecoming parade on the street behind our house. The kids did well on candy collection.
Then we drove our to a farm south of Marquette for a fall festival. Activities included a hay ride, pumpkins, cider making and drinking, and enjoying a beautiful afternoon. We stopped at Quiznos on the way home.

We had stake conference today, so I had time to take the kids for an early morning walk down the street to NMU where they like to run on the hill and hide in the bushes.
Ethan was in Colorado on his clinicals for two weeks and went camping and hiking for the weekend. Angela was in a state of high anxiety since he was out of cell phone coverage for 24 hours!

Labor Day- Farewell to Summer

Labor Day is my least favorite holiday since it marks the end of summer and the return to the grind of school and work. But it was a great weekend.

Sunday after church, I took Buddy on a two hour walk in the woods in ideal weather.

Labor Day morning, Andrew and Austyn, Stuart and James, and Travis Rogers (from church) and I canoed on the Autrain River. The weather was perfect with the temperature in the 60's and slightly overcast to keep away the glare of the sun. The boys did really well with their canoeing. A blue heron kept skipping ahead of us and there were numerous ducks along the way. I forgot the camera, so there is no photographic evidence of our good time.

We ended the day with a popcorn party at home with Andrew, Sabrina, and Austyn joining us and Angela's family.

In the afternoon, we attended the traditional Ward picnic at Whitney and Martha Johnson's home. It was a great time!Austyn and James bury their friend Tyler on Johnson's beach.

Beach football is popular for the young folks.

Susan bought a kiddie table that made the kids feel like the grown ups at the picnic.

Ethan was home for the weekend after his first week of clinical study (like an internship) near Saginaw. He has another week there, then goes to Colorado for two weeks.
