The other mighty Mac

A Scouting friend of mine in the Coast Guard, Jim Simmons, is now assigned to the Coast Guard ice breaker Mackinaw. It was moored in Marquette's lower harbor over the 4th of July weekend. Jim gave Scouter Marv Gibson, his wife Lois, and me a private tour of the boat. The original Mackinaw was built in WWII to keep the Great Lakes shipping lanes open longer. The current Mackinaw was commissioned in 2006 so it is crammed with the latest technology.

The Army Reserve engineer unit is bridge builders. They were supporting the set up for the fire works, loading the fireworks in the barrels at the left to take to the abandoned ore dock.
